Company Background:
Applied Reasoning was founded in 1991 to commercialize artificial intelligence technology developed at Purdue University's Knowledge-Based Systems Lab. In 1995, the company was divided into two divisions, one selling object-oriented (OO) software development tools in the Smalltalk market, and the second offering OO software development consulting services to Fortune 500 firms. Applied Reasoning's services were sought out by firms that wanted to make the transition to object-oriented software development and distributed object computing in Smalltalk.

From 1996 through 1999, the company's products division grew by releasing three major products including: Dynamic Diagram Framework (DDF), which was a product for building highly interactive diagram-based user interfaces for visualizing complex systems; GeoSynchrony, which was an advanced geographic information system (GIS) tool for incorporating geo-spatial information into an application; and Classic Blend, which was a Java thin-client middleware product for putting Smalltalk applications on the Web. The services company also grew by focusing its efforts on the telecommunications industry.

In 1999, the company made a successful transition to Java technology consulting with a focus on the financial services industry. The product division began transforming Classic Blend into a total Java technology product. In February 2001, a new version of Classic Blend for the Java marketplace was released. In 2000, the company began rearchitecting Classic Blend for use in wireless mobile devices. The new mobile product is called Mobile Classic Blend.

In 2000, Applied Reasoning was identified as number 232 on Deloitte & Touche's Technology Fast 500, which recognizes the 500 fastest growing technology companies in the U.S., based on a five-year percentage increase in revenues.
